Davie, Florida: Drug abuse trends

In 2020, the whole country experienced a major increase in overdose deaths. While the USA reported a 30 percent increase in fatal overdoses, Florida’s rate went up by more than 37 percent. Generally, Florida is the second worst state in the nation for deadly overdoses. In 2020, Florida reported 7,579 who did not survive drug overdose, and the numbers are still rising.

Fentanyl use in Florida has gained traction in recent years. Some experts say that the sunny state is a port of entry for drugs due to its many international airports and ports, making it easier for everyone to smuggle drugs into the state. Data collected by the Flordia Department of Health shows a steady increase in naloxone administration over the past four years in Broward County. From 2018 through 2021, Broward County saw roughly a 12 percent decrease in prescriptions dispensed. However, the county still experienced a 36 percent increase in the frequency of naloxone used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.

Davie police officers found a massive amount of pot in the field

In July 2022, Davie police received a tip that led them west of Davie, where they found illegal marijuana growing in a field. They posted a picture of it on social media and stated that there were about 15 large pots containing marijuana plants. In jest, since growing marijuana is highly punishable as a third-degree felony and up to five years in prison in Florida, Davie police encouraged people to give them a call if they were missing their marijuana plants.
