Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Darien, CT

In partnership with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and the Department of Children and Families (DCF), the Connecticut Department of Health created the Change the Script campaign. This statewide public awareness campaign brings attention to the ongoing prescription drug abuse and opioid misuse crisis affecting communities throughout Darien and surrounding Connecticut locations.

The program connects local town leaders, healthcare professionals, treatment professionals, and the local population to resources to fight prescription opioid misuse. A heavy focus of the campaign is to bring awareness to live-saving measures such as the emergency use of Naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal treatment drug. From billboards to radio scipts, the program continues to provide crucial information to help locals in need.

Laws and Regulations Pertaining to Substance Abuse in Darien, CT

To combat the ongoing issue of the opioid epidemic experienced throughout Darien and the state of Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont signed Public Act No. 19-191 "An Act Addressing Opioid Use" into law in 2019. Expanding on preexisting opioid regulations laws placed upon the state, updated law now requires hospitals who are treating patients for nonfatal opioid overdoses to administer a mental health screening. This further allows health professionals to target specific mental concerns that may influence a patient's decision to abuse opioids.

Furthermore, under Public Act No. 19-191, new prescribing regulations for health professionals were implemented to better address the issue of opioid abuse in patients. Under these new regulations, any prescribing health professional that prescribes more than a 12-week supply for pain treatment must establish a treatment agreement with patients. This treatment agreement includes treatment goals, opioid use risk, and treatment expectations for potential instances in which a patient becomes dependent on a prescription.
