Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Dallas DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing paternity in Dallas, TX

If a father and mother were not married when the child was conceived or born, the father would have to establish paternity to have all the legal rights as a parent. Establishing paternity in Dallas, Texas is easy and can be done just by signing the Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP). In this case, you do not have to go to court if both the parents sign it.

In case your child was born outside of Texas, or you want a judge to establish the visitations, custody, child support, and medical support, you will have to file a paternity case or open a case with OAG.

There is also an exception in case the mother is married to somebody but has the child with somebody else. In that case, the husband is presumed to be the father, and you can not sign AOP unless the presumed father signs a Denial of Paternity.

Benefits of establishing paternity in Dallas, Texas

There are multiple reasons why people should establish paternity in Dallas, Texas. Once paternity is established, legal rights come with that as well.

For children, establishing paternity means they can access their medical history. If it applies, they will have the right to financial support from both parents and other benefits such as social security, insurance, inheritance, and veteran’s benefits.

Recent research shows that the children who grow up with involved parents do better not only in school but in life as well. They are more likely to have better grades and less likely to be suspended or expelled. They also score higher on math and reading tests and IQ tests.

Children with both parents involved are 75 percent less likely to have a teen birth and 80 percent less likely to spend time in jail.
