Coral Springs, Florida: Drug abuse trends

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the number of drug overdoses in Coral Springs, Florida. Experts say that social distancing, unemployment, depression, and anxiety caused more deaths in 2020 due to the alarming number of people turning to drugs to cope. The pandemic even caused many people who had been sober for years to relapse. Due to social distancing protocols, even more people were using drugs alone, eliminating the chance of anyone helping them in the case of fatal overdoses.

The data from Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department shows that 43 individuals died because of drug overdoses in 2020 compared to 26 in 2019 and 20 in 2018. The most often used drugs in the area were heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers.

Coral Springs man arrested after a drug traffic bust

Police pulled over a Coral Springs man after he ran a red light. They found fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin inside his car and arrested him. Police said that as soon as they approached him, they noticed cocaine, which led them to discover a quarter of a gram of fentanyl powder, crystalline rocks of methamphetamine, less than two grams of white and brown heroin, and more cocaine.

Police seized the drugs and booked the man into the Broward Main Jail on multiple charges. Later, he was released on a $4,100 bond.
