Concord, CA: Drug abuse trends

The number of individuals dying because of fatal drug overdoses in Contra Costa County has spiked. Despite efforts and administration of Narcan (a drug commonly known for reversing overdoses), some people did not survive. The most significant issue has been the involvement of the highly potent opioid called fentanyl. Fentanyl use has become frequent and has led to an influx of drug overdoses in the Concord area.

Fentanyl's low cost of production and high potency has made it more popular in the area. The opioid is often mixed with other substances before it is sold, and the people purchasing the drugs have no idea fentanyl is present. As a result, fentanyl contributes to even more drug overdose deaths. It only takes a very tiny amount of fentanyl to be fatal.

Contra Costa County Deputy arrested because of drugs and weapons

In August 2022, a deputy was arrested after a search warrant. Police found firearms and drugs at his home and charged him with receiving stolen property, a felony for grand theft of a firearm, a felony for unlicensed firearm transfer, a felony for filing a false report, destroying or concealing evidence, and possessing a controlled substance.

The Sheriff's office said they were disappointed to arrest one of their employees. Still, they said no one should be above the law, so they started the investigation once they had the first allegations. In the past, the man was named the Department's Officer of the Year twice a row. He was released on bail for $175,000.
