Columbia, Maryland: Drug abuse trends

Maryland has seen significant progress in recent years regarding drug overdose deaths. However, the COVID-19 pandemic was a setback for the state because it exacerbated the opioid epidemic due to job loss, increased mental health challenges, and lower recovery and treatment services availability. Columbia falls under Howard County, which experienced a 43 percent increase in deadly opioid overdoses in 2020 compared to 2019. In 2020, Howard County and the state of Maryland experienced a major increase in overdoses and hit its highest opioid fatality at over 2,500 deaths.

Fortunately, the situation improved in 2021 when the non-fatal overdoses decreased by ten percent and the fatal overdoses decreased by 57 percent in Howard County. The county reported that everybody who experienced non-fatal overdoses had received Narcan—a drug that can reverse overdose effects.

Police seized large amount of fentanyl and charged six people in Howard County

Police charged six people with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl in Baltimore and Howard County. They were directing an operation between September 2021 and June 2022 in Baltimore City, Baltimore, and Howard County. Detectives confirmed the distribution of a large amount of fentanyl throughout Maryland. Police also stated they knew that the fentanyl led to multiple fatal overdoses in the state. The police seized two kilograms of fentanyl and six handguns.
