Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Colorado Springs DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Colorado Springs, Colorado – DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2022, a Colorado Springs, CO resident, Helene Schmidt, took a DNA test and was surprised to learn she has a half-sister living in Winnipeg, Canada. She discovered she and her half-sister have the same birth year, and she sent her a message. Her half-sister, Raelene Recksiedler, responded, and Schmidt said she gained a best friend and sister and learned a lot about her family and where she came from. Her dad was given a job up north, where he met their mother. Schmidt was born in Canada but was put up for adoption and moved to the United States to live with her adoptive family. Recksiedler was also born in Canada 42 days after Schmidt. The sisters share the same father but have different mothers. They also learned they both have a rare genetic disease called Neurofibromatosis from their father. After finding her sister, Recksiedler said, “I feel like it was just the perfect timing the way Helene came into my life, you know? I now have a sister who is going to be there for me and we are going to be able to be together now.”

Experts Say…

The Harris Law Firm, serving Colorado Springs, explains that both mothers and fathers can file a paternity lawsuit. “Many father figures want to spend time with their child and the only way to secure visitation rights is to establish parenthood,” the law firm explains. ” Mothers seeking child support from their former partner can petition the court for a DNA test in order to receive financial support.”

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Colorado Springs, CO

In Colorado Springs, a mother and father can establish paternity by adding the father’s name to the birth certificate when the child is born or later by signing a certificate of paternity. Paternity can also be established through the court system if both parties disagree about the child’s biological father, and DNA testing to prove paternity can be requested by either party if there is any question. Once paternity is established, the court can issue child support, visitation, and custody orders.
