Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Christiansburg DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Facts about DNA Testing in Christiansburg VA

Christiansburg, VA Child Support Information

Christiansburg noncustodial parents must pay child support to help contribute toward the costs associated with raising their child. The Virginia Department of Social Services (DCSE), in addition to coordinating child support, offers free family engagement services to Christiansburg residents. They help with access and visitation and establishing paternity in the state of Virginia. A parent can request child support if they’re divorcing, legally separating or establishing paternity, if the child is wholly or partially in their custody.

A court may establish Christiansburg child support orders, or Virginia’s Department of Social Services orders them. When divorce or paternity cases involve minor children living in Christiansburg, a child support order is included.

Virginia sets the child support guidelines for social services and courts to use. However, upon examining evidence, courts and social services may award a different amount than what is found in these guidelines. Several factors are considered, including the amount of time each parent spends with the child, how many children are involved, each parent’s gross income, if one of the parents is receiving maintenance payments, health insurance costs and work-related childcare costs.

Christiansburg, VA Paternity Information

In Christiansburg, there are a couple of ways to establish paternity. The first method is if the parents are married because, under Virginia law, this creates a presumption of paternity. If a woman becomes pregnant within ten months of a marriage, the presumption is that the husband is the father. The second method involves DNA testing or a statement the parents make while under oath that confirms paternity.

Paternity cases also involve situations where a man believes he’s the father of a child. In these cases, Christiansburg has what is referred to as a Putative Father Registry. Putative fathers are men who might be the child’s biological father, but paternity hasn’t been acknowledged or established, he’s not married to the child’s mother and he didn’t adopt the child.

The putative registry is confidential and, if court proceedings occur, the father will receive a notification. This registration assists men when establishing paternity but doesn’t automatically establish rights or paternity.
