Auburn, AL: Drug abuse trends

Alabama is experiencing a significant increase in fentanyl overdose deaths. In 2020, 428 people died because of this drug. In 2021, the number hit 830 deaths, and in 2022, there were at least 835 fentanyl-related overdoses in Alabama. Fentanyl and other opioids have outpaced methamphetamine in terms of popularity and related health complications, with fentanyl marking the steepest increase in treatment admissions.

The city of Auburn has joined the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) initiative. The program’s core objective is to educate the youth about the dangers of substance abuse and provide them with strategies to resist peer pressures associated with drug consumption, alcohol intake, and tobacco use.

Overdose response leads to drug bust in Auburn

In December 2022, Auburn police responded to an overdose of a 21-year-old woman. She received Narcan and was taken to a medical center for treatment. Once police arrived, they suspected a 29-year-old male of providing illegal drugs to the woman. They searched his car and home and found about 16,000 pills of Xanax, Percocet, and Adderall. The pills also contained fentanyl. Additionally, detectives found cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, a gun, and about 37,000 dollars. The man is now facing multiple drug charges.
