Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our New York DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing paternity in New York, NY

If you are married while conceiving a child or when the child is born, the husband is automatically considered the father. If unmarried at the time of conception or birth, paternity may need to be established.

Paternity can be established in multiple ways. Firstly, you can sign a document —an Acknowledgement of Paternity—usually signed by the mother and the father at the hospital after the baby's birth. This form can be signed anytime before the child turns 21. Secondly, the court can decide paternity. For this, you will need to file a petition, and the court often orders a DNA test to determine the father's identity. Finally, there can be a surrogacy agreement or a record showing the parents' consent to use assisted reproduction.

Benefits for establishing paternity in New York, New York

There are multiple benefits when establishing paternity for the child, the mother, and the father. The mother can share her financial responsibilities and has more financial security after establishing paternity. There are also multiple benefits for the father, such as his name on the child's birth certificate, right to custody or visitation, and right to be consulted on adoption or other legal processes involving the child.

Of course, knowing both parents can often be important for the child as well. Legal benefits for the child can include the father's name on their birth certificate, access to information about the father's family medical history, financial support, and medical insurance. If applicable, the child may receive the father's social security, veterans, or military benefits, and inheritance after the father's passing.
